Officers from the Ministry of Defence Police and the Hampshire Police are investigating the theft of £2,600 in money from a safe on board the Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier H.M.S. CENTAUR which is berthed in Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

The money is believed to be the pay for the ship’s complement of 1,390 men.

The ship, a Fleet Aircraft Carrier, had been paid off from active service in December 1965 and had been used as an accommodation ship at Devonport, and is now based at Portsmouth to accommodate the crew of another aircraft carrier, H.M.S. VICTORIOUS, which is also in Portsmouth Dockyard.
