Hay Hamilton of Glasgow and Ross and Marshall of Greenock merge to form Glenlight Shipping Ltd.

Today the Clyde’s two most prominent “Puffer” owners, Hay Hamilton Ltd of Glasgow and Ross and Marshall of Greenock, merged to form a new Company, Glenlight Shipping Ltd., and the firm will operate from the offices of Clyde Shipping Company at 78 Carlton Place, Glasgow, Clyde Shipping Company being the parent company of Ross and Marshall.

Glenlight Shipping will operate a fleet of 15 vessels, most of them being modern diesel powered ships, although there are also a few of the old, traditional steam-powered “Puffers.”

The new company has retained all of the existing shore and sea staff and will continue to trade primarily throughout the Clyde and Western Isles and will also visit the Irish Sea and East Coast and other ports and areas as required.

The name "Glenlight" was chosen as it combines the "Glen" from the Hay Hamilton nomenclature for their ships (example GLENSHIEL, GLENARAY, GLENCLOY) and "Light" from the Ross & Marshall ships (examples RAYLIGHT, DAWNLIGHT, POLARLIGHT).
