A middle-aged male passenger was lost overboard from the ferry ST CLAIR about two hours after leaving Lerwick in the Shetland Isles on her regular passage to Aberdeen.

The ship, built in 1960 and 296 feet long, a passenger-cargo vessel operated by the North of Scotland, Orkney and Shetland Steam Navigation Company, was battling a severe storm and hurricane-force winds and was unable to turn around to make a search due to the severity of the weather.
