A very unusual occurrence happened at the launching at Greenock of the 13,241 gross ton 520 feet long bulk carrier BAKNES when, on being launched and leaving the slipway and entering the water, a cable attached to the drag-chains did not free itself and remained holding the floating vessel to the chains at the building slipway.

BAKNES effectively blocked the shipping channel off the Scott Lithgow Cartsdyke Shipyard for over an hour and prevented ships from using the river.

The Royal Navy Salvage vessel H.M.S. KINGARTH was at the nearby Admiralty Base at Great Harbour, Greenock and quickly came to assist and her crew cut the cable with oxy-acetylene cutting equipment.

BAKNES was then towed by her attending tugs to the Kingston Fitting-Out Basin at Port Glasgow.   The ship is expected to enter service next February and will be managed by J & J Denholm of Glasgow.
