On 4th February 1954 the tanker ROSA MAERSK, registered in Fredericia, Denmark, was in the Ocean Tanker berth 12 at Ardrossan Harbour and had completed discharging her cargo of fuel oil to the nearby Shell Oil Refinery.  Her master was Captain C. Dilling Larsen and her draught was 18’ 00.”

About 1110 the Ardrossan Harbour tug SEAWAY attached to the tanker’s stern and the Steel & Bennie tug STRONGBOW  which had arrived from Greenock attached to the tanker’s bow and at 1125 the two tugs started towing ROSA MAERSK astern from the berth and through the 300-feet wide entrance between the Lighthouse and breakwater to the Roadstead where they turned her to face seawards and the tanker left on voyage to the Persian Gulf.

When the tugs were released by the Harbour Pilot the STRONGBOW then left the Roadstead to return to her base at Greenock.
