A fire broke out on the freighter AMERICAN ROVER as she was

near Cape Race, Newfoundland, on passage from New York

to Rotterdam with a general cargo including paint and rubber.

The ship was built in 1959 and is 11,200 gross tons and is

of a thoroughly modern design with an automated engine

room and is owned by United States Lines Inc., whose offices

are on Broadway, New York City.

A salvage tug and Coast Guard cutters from Canada and

U.S.A. are making for AMERICAN ROVER and other vessels

are standing by her.   Latest reports from the vessel state

that the crew are tackling the fire and that it is now under

control.

It is not known if there have been any casualties.
