Jim Muir writes :

SPINEL was completed in 1937 for William Robertson's Gem Line of Glasgow

She served mainly on the Irish Sea trade, and on outbreak of world War 11 in 1939 was requisitioned by Britain's Ministry of War Shipping

In 1940 she was at Dunkirk and sank there due to damage inflicted by the Germans. They soon salvaged her and used her as a transport to the Channel Islands, which were under German occupation.

In 1946, after cessation of hostilities, SPINEL was released from Government service under the name EMPIRE SPINEL, and in 1946 was returned to Robertsons under her original name SPINEL,

SPINEL served Robertsons for the next 24 years until she was sold for scrap in 1970
