HERDSMAN was built by William Doxford and Sons Ltd., Sunderland and launched on 26 July 1946 for T. and J. Harrison Line and delivered to the company at a cost of £422,986
. Her maiden voyage commenced in London and took in the Continent before heading to South Africa.
She was sold in 1965 to Hwa Aun Company (Hong Kong) Ltd. and renamed Hock Aun.
In 1969 she was sold to Pacific International Lines Ltd., Singapore where she was operated as Kota Selamat. On 12 March 1969 she was in collision with the Panamanian ferry Dasman off Port Sudan and sustained extensive damage to her hull. She was repaired and sailed for Aqaba.
She was sold to Chinese shipbreakers and arrived at Whampoa on 9 November 1973.
