On 20th October 1962 KAAP HOORN was assisted bow-first from Ardrossan roads into the tanker berth by the tugs SEAWAY (at the bow) and CAMPAIGNER (at the stern), and tied-up at the berth at 0425 She was carrying a cargo of crude oil for the nearby Shell Refinery at North Crescent Road, Ardrossan At 1620 on 21st October KAAP HOORN departed from Ardrossan, stern-first from the berth to the roads, towed by the tugs SEAWAY (at the stern) and THUNDERER (at the bow). At the roads the tanker let go the tugs and left Ardrossan on passage to Curacao. The distance from Ardrossan to Curacao is about 7294 km or 4522 miles, and at 14.5 knots would take the ship around 13 days for the voyage
