Horse Island now a bird sanctuary |
From "The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald" dated 1st February 1963.
HORSE ISLAND
NEW BIRD SANCTUARY ESTABLISHED
The Secretary of State for Scotland has made an Order under the Protection of Birds Act 1954, establishing Horse Island, off Ardrossan, as a bird sanctuary.
The Order, which comes into force on 1st March, makes it an offence to kill, injure or take away any wild bird or take or destroy any wild bird's egg on the Island, and landing there at any time without the permission of the Royal Society For The Protection Of Birds becomes an offence.
The primary purpose of the sanctuary is to protect the breeding grounds of roseate terns.
The Order has the support of the Advisory Committee on the Protection of Birds for Scotland.
The owners and Ayr County Council were consulted and offered no objection to the making of the Order, copies of which can be obtained from Her Majesty's Stationery Office, price 3d. |
