HMS WALRUS (1961-1987 Porpoise class submarine 290 feet long of Royal Navy, London) Own Page

Girl stows away on Royal Navy submarine H.M.S. WALRUS

Ship's locationNear Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.Port of RegistryAdmiralty, London

Incredible as it may sound a girl stowed-away on a British Navy Submarine.

The Royal Navy submarine H.M.S. WALRUS had been at Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. on a courtesy visit after completing Naval exercises in the Atlantic and had left Baltimore on passage for the Holy Loch in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland.

About five hours after leaving Baltimore a girl stowaway was found hiding in the submarine’s conning tower.   She said that she wanted to go to England to see her father who was stationed there with the U.S. Military.

The submarine returned to Baltimore and Police removed the girl from the ship.

H.M.S. WALRUS is a Porpoise class submarine and was built by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Greenock.   She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1961, is 290 feet long, has a complement of 71 men and has 8 torpedo tubes and carries 30 torpedoes.
