IRISH ELM shifts from berth 3 to berth 2 Meadowside Quay, Glasgow |

Irish Shipping’s cargo ship IRISH ELM arrived at berth 3 Meadowside Quay, Glasgow at 1525 on 19th March 1957. Two Clyde Shipping Company tugs brought her to the berth and she tied up with her head west (that is heading downriver) and drawing 24’ 02” forward and 26’ 00” aft and was carrying 7,500 tons of grain from Philadelphia U.S.A. Her Agent in Glasgow was the John S Braid Company. At 1100 on 20th March, to position the ship for unloading, IRISH ELM shifted along the quayside to berth 2, her draught being unchanged. Clyde Navigation Trust began unloading the grain to the adjacent huge Meadowside Granary at 1300 on 20th March and completed discharge at 1815 on 25th March. On 22nd March the harbour oiler SHELL MEX 5 came alongside and bunkered her with 300 tons of fuel oil and on 25th March SHELL MEX 5 again came alongside, this time bunkering her with 220 tons of fuel oil. Assisted by two Clyde Shipping tugs, IRISH ELM left her berth light ship (= no cargo on board = empty of cargo) at 2155 on 25th March and, drawing 11’ 00” forward and 18’ 00” aft, made her way down the River Clyde and out past Ireland and across the Atlantic Ocean to Key West in Florida, U.S.A. for orders. Quite quaintly, the Dock Log-Book describes Key West as “Quay West.” |
