The Sound of Scarba and the Sound of Shuna were both built on the Clyde by Ferguson Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow.

The Sound of Scarba was the first of the two vessels designed and built by the yard specifically for the route. The design was based on many years of operational experience by Western Ferries and included enhanced passenger and vehicle facilities combined with a modern and efficient dual propulsion arrangement.
The Sound of Scarba entered service in May 2001 followed by the second vessel Sound of Shuna in October 2003.
