Puffer WARLIGHT is on passage from Salen (Isle of Mull) towards Greenock.

The previous day, Friday 11th May, the vessel had left Salen heading for Troon (on the Firth of Clyde) to pick up a cargo of coal.   She had entered the Crinan Canal (which saves a long journey around the Mull of Kintyre) and was passing through the Canal when her rudder became damaged.

The Master telephoned the ship manager and reported the damage.   The Ross & Marshall ship manager was available 24/7 every day at the office and at home, because the puffers used the telephone system for passing information and receiving orders.   The ship manager told the Master to make for Greenock for drydocking to repair the rudder.   Drydocking took from 14th to 19th May then WARLIGHT returned to service.
