Mr. Hugh Lewis Retires After 50 Years Service With Ardrossan Harbour Company |
Presentations to retiring Traffic Superintendent
Mr Hugh Lewis, 7 Yarborough Place, Ardrossan, has retired after almost fifty years' service with Ardrossan Harbour Company.
Three years after he joined the company in 1914, Mr Lewis enlisted with the 18th H.L.I.
For the remainder of the First World War, he served in France with the rank of Corporal, and on demobilisation he returned to Ardrossan Harbour where he worked as a docker.
In 1930 he was promoted to the post of assistant foreman and thirteen years later he became traffic foreman.
In the same year he was elected to the Area Board of the National Dock Labour Board, a post which he held until his retiral from the company.
During the Second World War Mr Lewis served as a sergeant in the Harbour Company Home Guard.
In 1960 he was promoted to Traffic Superintendent.
In recognition of his long service with the company, the chairman and directors presented Mr Lewis with a refrigerator at a function held in the Eglinton Arms Hotel, Ardrossan.
Mr James Robertson, chairman of the company, made the presentation, and also present at the ceremony was Mr James Morton, Director in charge.
At a more informal presentation ceremony held in the harbour offices on Tuesday, 30th December, gifts from Mr Lewis's friends and colleagues were handed over by Mr Morton.
In recognition of his meritorious service to the docks industry, Mr Lewis received the full colours of the National Dock Labour Board.
Members of the local Area Board gave him a set of crystal glasses. |
