M. URITZKY (In 1966 a cruise liner of the Russian Mikhail Kalinin class:passenger fleet) Own Page

Master of Russian cruise ship M. URITZKY cables a complaint from Hong Kong to London

Ship's locationHong Kong (at that time a British Colony)Port of RegistryRussia
Gross Tonnage4,870

Princess Margaret and her husband Lord Snowdon of the British Royal Family were on an official visit to the British Colony of Hong Kong when an unhappy incident occurred involving the Russian Cruise Liner M. URITZKY.

The 4,870 gross ton Russian ship, of the Mikhail Kalinin class, had arrived today with about 270 Japanese tourist passengers and the eager passengers quickly landed to explore the city.

However, due to the strict security precautions in force to protect the Royal couple the Hong Kong Police would not allow any of the 155 Russian crew of the ship to go ashore, and they were required to remain on board the vessel.

Captain Nikolai Amorosov on the M. URITZKY said that this was the first time that a Russian cruise liner had called at Hong Kong and he could not understand why his crew were prevented from going ashore and he had sent a strongly worded cable to London protesting against the ban.

The Princess visited shops in Kowloon and a Hospital and also went to City Hall where she formally opened British week, a trade promotion which exhibited the best of British goods and exports.

Note : We welcome any details or information on this vessel.

The three vessels are the ARDTARA, a 5,806 gross ton cargo ship owned by Mullion & Co. Ltd. of Hong Kong and registered in Glasgow and GREENFORD, 2,964 gross tons and registered in Liverpool and MILFORD 1,889 gross tons and registered in Hong Kong.

ARDTARA was well known in British and European waters from 1954 to 1964 when she was named BRITISH MONARCH of Monarch Steamship Co. Ltd. of Glasgow and managed by Harrisons (Clyde) Ltd. and then sold in 1964 to the Mullion Company.

There are now eight ships on the United States blacklist — six British, one from Cyprus and one from Greece.
