The Dutch general cargo coaster SPARTA went aground on the estuary of the River Tweed at Berwick on the East coast of Scotland.

Heavy seas were running outside the port and SPARTA, despite being warned that the port was closed to shipping, attempted to enter and crossed the sandbar at the entrance and grounded about 100 metres up the estuary.

A Coastguard rescue team stood by and an attempt was made to free the vessel but she remained fast aground.
