The Royal Navy E-class Destroyer H.M.S. ESCORT arrived at the French port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz with 56 refugees, including 12 Britons, from Bilbao in Spain. The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 was raging and the refugees told of about 80 hostages being shot by Government supporters.

ORION, the Aircraft Carrier H.M.S. COURAGEOUS and the Light Cruiser H.M.S. CAIRO which was leading a number of Destroyers of the Fifth Flotilla. Many Liberty Men went ashore and took part in games and local people were able to visit some of the ships. The Fleet will leave for four days of exercises and gunnery practice.

The Radio Conference of Seafaring Nations recommend a new common wave-length for ships |
||||||||||||||
At a meeting in The Hague of The Radio Conference of Seafaring Nations a recommendation was agreed to have a new common wave-length of between 1900 and 2000 metres for radio messages sent by ships. The present wave-length is 1875 metres and this has been found liable to interference by the Dutch Transmitting Station at Kootwyk and also the Roumanian station at Bod.
