In February the Lyle shipping Company took delivery of the cargo ship CAPE SABLE (10,900 tons) from William Denny and Brothers, Dumbarton, and she sailed from London on her maiden voyage with 1,000 cars, one of the biggest cargoes of this type ever to leave this country. In the CAPE SABLE, and in her sister ship CAPE WRATH, now being fitted-out at Dumbarton, the cargo space can be divided into motor-car platforms, six to a hold, about 900 tons of timber planking being laid on steel framework to augment the deck space. When the cars are unloaded the planks can be arranged to make the ships grain-carriers and the steel supporting joists hinged into the ships’ sides. A further five ships in the Lyle fleet are also fitted for the carriage of cars. |
