A 24-hour strike by Southampton dockers in protest over the employer’s rejection of a claim for more pay and better conditions brought cargo operations in the port to a halt.

The strike, which is unofficial, was called by shop stewards at a meeting of the men.

The liner UNITED STATES from New York, which was docking, has more than 5,300 bags of mail for Britain, which will remain in the hold until dockers resume work.

More than 800 passengers from Australia on the FAIRSTAR were staying on board overnight and will land today.
