Johnson Warren Line’s NEWFOUNDLAND briefly aground at Argentia, Newfoundland

The 1948-built and 440-feet long passenger and cargo liner NEWFOUNDLAND of Johnson Warren Line of Liverpool ran aground on a reef outside Argentia Harbour in Newfoundland and remained stuck for six hours before floating off.

The 7,437 ton Liverpool registered vessel, with 98 passengers aboard, was on passage from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to St. John’s, Newfoundland, and encountered severe gales and heavy ice along the coast which forced her to make for Argentia for shelter.   She anchored off Argentia, but the storm caused her to drag her anchor, and she went aground on a reef, damaging a few plates in her stern.
