A new method of shipping Scotch whisky to prevent damage or pilferage is being tested on the loading of the Furness Withy cargo ship PACIFIC STRONGHOLD at Prince’s Dock, Glasgow.

About 80,000 cases of whisky are being shipped in the vessel, but the test consignment consists of 910 cases from George Ballantine & Son Ltd, Dumbarton, these cases being packed in aluminium-framed containers each containing 182 cases and the containers are sealed by Customs Officers at the Distillery and will not be opened until they reach their destination, San Francisco.

A spokesman for Furness Withy said that the containerisation would ease the passing through Customs, prevent pilfering or damage and loading would be speeded up as a normal lift was 16 cases.
