About 1430 Ardrossan tug SEAWAY and Steel & Bennie tug CHIEFTAIN (Master D McLaughlin) met the Norwegian tanker VESTVARD at the Roadstead, about 2 miles off Ardrossan Harbour and connected their towlines, SEAWAY at the tanker’s bow and CHIEFTAIN at the tanker’s stern. Both tugs then towed VESTVARD from the Roadstead and through the Harbour entrance and berthed her at berth 12 Ocean Tanker Berth, where she would discharge her cargo of Fuel Oil through pipelines to the nearby Shell Oil Refinery at North Crescent Road, Ardrossan. On being released by the Pilot at 1525, tug SEAWAY returned to her berth in Ardrossan and CHIEFTAIN left Ardrossan to return the 30 miles to her base at Greenock.
