There was and still is little employment in Arran and many residents worked during the week on the mainland and in Glasgow and travelled back to Arran on the last sailing on Fridays to spend the weekend at home with their families.

Consequently the first ferry from Brodick to Ardrossan on a Monday morning was always very busy for passengers returning to work on the mainland and Caledonian MacBrayne usually rostered a spare vessel to make a relief sailing from Brodick at 0700 on Monday mornings.

When larger vessels with greater passenger capacity eventually came onto the "Arran run" the relief vessels were discontinued.
