William Robertson of Glasgow Gem Line general cargo coaster TOURMALINE (1948-1955) working in the Guinea Gulf of West Africa

William Robertson’s coaster TOURMALINE normally worked carrying cargoes of coal and limestone to ports in the Irish Sea area of U.K.

But from August 1951 to May 1953 the vessel was based in the Gold Coast area of West Africa carrying drums of petroleum between ports in Nigeria, Ghana etc.   Then she returned to U.K. and resumed the Irish Sea trade.

Does anyone have information on why Gem Line were used, why TOURMALINE was chosen and the conditions of pay, leave etc for the crews ?
