Puffer lighter CLOCH LASS was hired by Ross & Marshall to attend the Canadian Pacific Railways liner EMPRESS OF CANADA which had arrived at Tail-of-the-Bank anchorage off Greenock from Liverpool to embark passengers for Canada.

CLOCH LASS would load the passengers’ luggage at Princes Pier, Greenock and take their luggage to the liner.

William Burke, who owned the CLOCH LASS would receive 2.5 per cent commission for the hire in addition to the hire fee.

CLOCH LASS was normally to be found working as a “garbage boat” attending the U.S. Navy vessels at the Holy Loch base and bringing their garbage / waste to Greenock for disposal.

When not so employed, the puffer / lighter would usually be seen berthed in Victoria Harbour, Greenock.
