Largs man Ian Hale rescues two people in Fairlie Bay

From "The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald" dated 19th March 1965

TWO RESCUED IN FAIRLIE BAY

A Largs man, Mr. Ian Hale, 26 Scott Crescent, rescued two people last Sunday when their small motor boat sprang a leak and capsized in Fairlie Bay.

Mr. Hale, coxwain of the inshore rescue boat at Largs, had been out fishing with three friends when he heard the couple's shouts for help as they clung to the side of a launch, the only craft moored in the area.
They had swum about 50 yards to reach it.

Mr. Hale brought his boat alongside and helped the couple, a girl reporter, believed to be from Saltcoats, and a photographer from a yachting magazine, aboard.
The couple, who were in the district to produce a feature article on yachting in Scotland, had left Fairlie to cross the two-mile wide stretch to the Wee Cumbrae.
When they were about 150 yards out, a seam split, and their boat started to sink.
Photographer Edward Holloway lost his camera, valued at about ?100.
