The steam tug Conqueror lay off to assist but weather deteriorated and the stricken ship headed for the port of Ardrossan
The ship ran aground near the harbour entrance and now taking on water.
Orders were given to abandon ship. Passengers were ferried in batches by longboat to the awaiting tug, all saved.
