Dockers and cranemen end their unofficial strike

From The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald dated Friday 14th February 1964

DOCKERS BACK AT WORK

UNOFFICIAL STRIKE OVER

An unofficial strike by fifty-nine registered dockers and twelve cranemen at Ardrossan Harbour ended on Wednesday morning when the men resumed work on, according to an Ardrossan Harbour Company spokesman, precisely the same conditions as were in force before the stoppage.

The cause of the strike, which began on Wednesday of last week, was a grievance about the rates paid in connection with a cargo which the men had handled approximately fourteen days earlier.

An offer to submit the dispute to arbitration was made by the Company.

With loading and unloading held up, five ships left the port during the strike.
A number of cargoes which had been expected did not arrive and Shipowners had to make other arrangements for their reception.
