From "The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald" dated Friday 10th July 1964 The Clyde steamer "Duchess of Hamilton" stood by a motor boat with four occupants as it dragged its anchor in a westerly gale off Innellan on Tuesday.
The rescue boat, manned by a volunteer crew comprising Mr. Ian Hale, a local publican; Mr. Fairlie McGill, a fireman, and Mr. Tom Atkinson, a police cadet, made the six-mile crossing to Innellan, took aboard the four occupants of the boat, and landed them at Innellan. |
