From "Ayrshire Post" dated Friday 3rd January 1969. Some senior pupils who are studying Russian at Ayr Academy had a recent visit to the Russian cargo vessel "Shenkursk," in Ayr harbour, and met the Captain Nikolay Karpob.
During the visit gifts were exchanged and captain Karpob invited Mr. Neil McCorkindale, rector, and members of staff to join him and members of his crew on board the "Shenkursk" for a time on Hogmanay, which they accepted. This was the first visit to Scotland for the Russian crew whose ship was carrying a cargo of timber.
