From "Ayrshire Post" dated Friday 3rd January 1969.

Some senior pupils who are studying Russian at Ayr Academy had a recent visit to the Russian cargo vessel "Shenkursk," in Ayr harbour, and met the Captain Nikolay Karpob.
The first of four visits between school and ship's crew, this one was followed by a visit by some members of the school staff, and on Christmas eve, the captain and members of the crew visited the school and spent the morning there.

During the visit gifts were exchanged and captain Karpob invited Mr. Neil McCorkindale, rector, and members of staff to join him and members of his crew on board the "Shenkursk" for a time on Hogmanay, which they accepted.

This was the first visit to Scotland for the Russian crew whose ship was carrying a cargo of timber.
Their home port is near Archangel in north-west Russia and they expect to reach their homeland on January 7.
