From "The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald" dated Friday 4th September 1964 SALTCOATS MAN FELL OVERBOARD Two men in a speedboat who had been searching for lost lobster pots saved the life of Mr. William McLaughlan (20) Pladda Road, Saltcoats, when he fell overboard from the stern of his ship, the 500-ton coaster Saint Rule, shortly after it had left Bangor, Co. Down, for Whitehaven on Wednesday of last week. One mile off Donaghadee, Co. Down, Mr. William Lennon (29), who operates day trips for holidaymakers, and Mr. Campbell McCullough, a university student, spotted McLaughlan struggling in the sea, dragged him on board and took the speedboat alongside the coaster. "When he saw that McLaughlan had injured his head, the skipper, who was on the bridge, asked us to take him to Donaghadee for medical attention." said Mr. Lennon. "The coaster then continued on its journey." |
