Twenty-three foreign crewmen were rescued by firemen from a blazing oil tanker at Rothesay Dock, Clydebank, Glasgow.

The ship, SAN SALVADOR, which is managed by Dorset Shipping Company Limited of Monrovia, Liberia, had arrived with a cargo of Gas Oil from Naples, Italy, and had discharged the oil before the fire started.

The blaze started in the engine room which is at the stern of the tanker and quickly spread to the deck above where the gangway led to the quayside.   As a result the crewmen were trapped on the ship and a Fire Brigade turntable ladder was used to bring them ashore and they were taken by ambulances to the Lesser Town Hall, Clydebank, which had been prepared for use as a receiving and treatment centre.

Dunbartonshire Fire Engines were assisted by units from Glasgow and it took a number of hours to extinguish the fire.

None of the ship’s crewmen were seriously injured though some were treated for smoke inhalation.
