Mr Robert Arnott retires after 46 years employment with Ardrossan Harbour Company

From "The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald" dated Friday 22nd December 1972.

HARBOUR EMPLOYEE RETIRES

Mr. Robert Arnott, 10 Mayville Street, Stevenston, retired from employment with Ardrossan Harbour Company this week after 46 years' service.
To mark the occasion over 40 friends and workmates attended his retiral presentation in the Dock Labour Board office on Tuesday.
Mr. Arnott came to Ardrossan Harbour as a capstan worker in 1926 and progressed to the position of sub-foreman in 1949 which he held until his retiral this week.

During his time at the harbour he witnessed the development of many things now taken for granted including the Shell Refinery, the tanker berth and the overall changes in the set up of the dock.

Mr. Arnott was a very popular figure at the harbour and received many gifts. Mr. John Shields, manager of Ardrossan Harbour Company presented him with a gold watch for his long years of service to the company and wished him many years of happiness in his retirement.
On behalf of the staff and workers at Ardrossan Harbour, Mr. John Donnelly presented Mr. Arnott with crystal glasses, a wall clock, a decanter and a bottle of whisky.
Mr. Arnott also received a lamp from Mr. Tommy Houghton on behalf of the Atlantic Steam Navigation Company.

In reply Mr. Arnott said that it was indeed a sad day for him but thanked everyone for their generous contributions.

Mr. Arnott plans to take things easy in his retiral and enjoy his favourite past times of fishing and boating. He is a keen member of Ardrossan and District Sea Angling Club and is also a warden for Horse Island bird sanctuary.

From "The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald" dated Friday 22nd December 1972

RETIRAL OF SHIP'S OFFICER MR. W. MEIN, OF "LAIRDSFOX"

A presentation was made to Mr. William Mein on board the M.V. "Lairdsfox" at Ardrossan Harbour on Wednesday when Mr. Mein retired after 23 years' service with Burns & Laird Lines.

Sixty-three-year-old Mr. Mein, who lives in Clarkston, Glasgow, joined Burns & Laird in 1949 as a third mate and during this time with the company served on most of their ships, including the "Royal Ulsterman", the "Scotsman," the "Fern," "Crest," "Wood" and the "Lion."
Before coming to the "Lairdsfox" Mr. Mein served as mate on the "Lairdsglen" for six years.

INTERESTING

Mr. Mein went to sea when he was 14 years old and during his 49 years as a seaman he has served on some interesting ships. A few years ago he was on the submarine depot ship "Cammel Laird" (the former "Royal Ulsterman") when she accompanied the nuclear submarine "Renown" on her trials off the West Coast of Scotland.

Mr. Mein was presented with a cheque, subscribed for by his colleagues and shipmates, and the presentation was made by Mr. W. B. Wilson, director and manager of Burns & Laird Lines in Scotland.
