Ally Mackenzie writes :

HMS Tamar is a Batch 2 River-class offshore patrol vessel of the

Royal Navy. Named after the River Tamar in England, this is the

seventh Royal Navy ship to be named Tamar. She is the fourth

Batch 2 River-class vessel to be built and was formally commissioned

on 4 June 2020.

I have enclosed some photos when she was at the No. 1 Elderslie

Dry Dock, Glasgow being fitted out.  Perhaps most interestingly, she’s

the ‘greenest’ ship in the Royal Navy  –  fitted with ‘catalytic converters’

which reduce nitrogen-based emissions from her engine exhausts by

up to 95 per cent.

HMS Tamar was laid down on 8th December 2016, launched on

the 10th October 2018 and fully commissioned 4th June 2020.

Photo one shows the bow of Tamar in the Elderslie Dry Docks.

Photo two and three shows Tamar port side.

   I hope you like them.

Your article of CLAN FRASER of 8th January 1964 says a rope

was put across King George V Dock, Glasgow while the ship was

making an engine trial.

Why put a rope across the dock and where would the rope

be attached to the ship and also attached to the dock ?

Old Mississippi – type passenger steamer in Sydney (Australia)

Old Mississippi – type passenger steamer in Sydney (Australia)

Jim Middleton (London) e-mails

29 December 2019

The BBC news today showed the wild fires at Sydney and

the smoke at Sydney Harbour.

I was surprised to see in the news report, in the

background, an old Mississippi type passenger steamer,

with two tall abreast funnels (stacks) passing under

the Harbour Bridge.

Can anyone give details of this vessel and its route

and timetable ?

   Thanks, JM.

CAPE NELSON (1948-1959 General cargo ship 442 feet overall of Lyle Shipping Company, Glasgow : 1967 scrapped) Own Page

Was this the Lyle Shipping's CAPE NELSON last visit to Glasgow ?

Port of RegistryGlasgow (Scotland, U.K.)

e-mail from T.J. of Glasgow.

I notice from your entry for CAPE NELSON that she left Glasgow for Palermo (Sicily) and Tokyo (Japan) in

September 1959, and that she was sold in 1959 to Hong Kong buyers.

I suspect that this sailing was probably her last visit to Glasgow and UK.

Can anyone confirm that this was her final visit to Glasgow ?

BULIMBA (1959-1971 General cargo ship of British India Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, London) Own Page

British India's BULIMBA or BAMORA at Colombo around 1966

Port of RegistryLondon (England, U.K.)
Gross Tonnage6,796

30 January 2020.

e-mail from “Jim the engine” of Morecambe (England)

I was interested in reading the P & O / British India entry.

In all my time at sea I never saw any P & O cargo ships, and

only once, around 1966, when in Colombo on Brocklebank’s

MAGDAPUR or MANGLA, saw one of the small British India

ships, possibly BULIMBA, BAMORA or the like, berthing at

Colombo.

The general opinion was they worked on the Australian

coast, and since she was maybe only 400 feet long we

thought would be too small for regular trips to Colombo.

But out East there seemed to be the blue hulled

Maersk ships everywhere you went.

Can someone tell where the BULIMBA and the

sisters actually worked ?
