At 1350 on 4th April 1962 British India's passenger ship DEVONIA

tied-up at berth 73 Plantation Quay, Glasgow, having just been converted

from a troopship to an educational cruise ship by Barclay Curle, Whiteinch, Glasgow, and moved upriver from Elderslie Dry Dock. She then

commenced storing (loading ship's stores, foodstuffs, etc) prior

to commencing her new service as a "School-ship" On 9th April

at 1330 she shifted from berth 73 to berth 77 Plantation Quay.

At 1000 on 10th April DEVONIA bunkered 200 tons fuel oil from

the oiler CLANITY, and again that day at 1500 bunkered another

495 tons of fuel oil again from CLANITY On 12th April at 0415

DEVONIA cast-off from 77 Plantation Quay, and moved a short

distance downriver to Prince's Dock where she canted at the

entrance and was underway for Liverpool at 0600. A few days

later she commenced her educational cruises, starting at Liverpool.

Some historical information is of interest. DEVONIA was built in

1939 as the troopship DEVONSHIRE for Bibby Line, Liverpool, and

in 1962 Bibby's sold her to British India Line, London, for £175,000

for conversion to an educational cruise ship carrying 194 cabin

passengers and 834 dormitory passengers. British India renamed

her DEVONIA. Conversion was made by Barclay Curle, Whiteinch

, Glasgow, and DEVONIA entered service with BI in Easter 1962.

For 5 years she carried school parties and special interest groups

to generally Scandanavian and Mediterranean ports, and, on 15th

December 1967, having completed 110 educational cruises, she was

sold to Cantieri Navali ‘Santa Maria’, Genoa, Italy, to be broken up.

Demolition began at La Spezia, Italy, in January 1968. DEVONIA

was replaced by the educational cruise ship UGANDA of British India Line,

LAKE PENNASK arrived in Glasgow at 1745 on 30th March 1962 from Avonmouth.

At 1000 on 2nd April the harbour oiler CLANITY came alongside and bunkered her with 100 tons of fuel oil

On 5th April the floating crane NEWSHOT loaded 3 lifts total 32 tons onto LAKE PENNASK

At 1600 on 9th April LAKE PENNASK departed Glasgow for Calcutta via Birkenhead

For those who are interested Lake Pennask is a lake in British Columbia, Canada and is located south of the community of Merritt. Pennask Lake offers excellent camping, fishing and outdoor recreation.

SANTONA arrived in berth at Prince's Dock, Glasgow, light-ship from London, at 0925 on 13th March 1962.

At 1200 on 21st March she shifted from Prince's Dock to Number 2 Govan Dry Dock, Glasgow, her draught forward being 7' 10" and 14 feet aft.

On 23rd March at 1334 SANTONA left Number 2 Govan Dry Dock and berthed at berth 12 Prince's Dock at 1350, her draught forward being 8' 3" and aft 13 feet.

Next day, 24th March at 1100 she shifted astern in berth 12, draught 8' 52 forward and 13' 22 aft.

The harbour oiler APEXITY came alongside at 0900 on 6th April and bunkered 120 tons of fuel oil onto SANTONA

At 1645 on 6th April she shifted ahead by 160 feet, draught forward being 13 feet and aft 15' 11"

Later that day, 6th April, from 1800 to 1820, she conducted engine trials with her stern off the quay, draught forward being 13 feet and aft 15' 11"

Immediately after the engine trial, at 1825 on 6th April, SANTONA shifted astern 160 feet, forward draught 13 feet and aft 15' 11"

Having now completed loading, SANTONA departed Glasgow for the Great Lakes at 1605 on 9th April.

Donaldson Line's LISMORIA arrived in Prince's Dock, Glasgow, at 0300 on 25th March 1962 from St John (New Brunswick)

At 1735 on 29th March she shifted downriver from Prince's Dock to the nearby Meadowside Granary on Meadowside Quay to discharge her cargo of 2,500 tons of grain.

Having completed discharge of the grain, she left Meadowside Quay, and returned to Prince's Dock, tying-up at berth 10/11 at 1740 on 31st March

At 1000 on 10th April the floating crane NEWSHOT came alongside and loaded one heavy lift of 17 tons onto LISMORIA

LISMORIA departed Glasgow at 0610 on 12th April for Montreal
