   The Shaw Savill & Albion Line passenger liner NORTHERN STAR was damaged today when gale-force winds twice blew her against the wharf as she was berthing at Wellington, New Zealand.

   The ship had arrived from Britain with 1400 passengers and with the valiant assistance of Harbour tugs NORTHERN STAR finally berthed after about four hours and eight attempts.

   Passengers on the 24,731 gross-ton 650ft (200m) vessel are on a round-the-world cruise which had started at Southampton and called at Las Palmas, Cape Town, Durban, Fremantle, Melbourne and Sydney before reaching Wellington.  After Wellington she will visit Auckland, Raratonga, Tahiti, Acapulco, Panama, Curacao, Trinidad, Barbados, Lisbon and finishing back at Southampton.

William Denny's HOVERBUS is delayed at Inverness by strong winds on her journey to the Thames

   The Dumbarton-built HOVERBUS which was on her 823-mile journey from the Clyde and going north-about through the Caledonian Canal to the Thames in London had to stop in Inverness due to the strong east wind.

   The builders of the hovercraft, Denny Hovercraft Ltd., are supplying the 83ft 6inches vessel for an experimental passenger-carrying service, and the craft is designed for use in sheltered  waters.   After Inverness she will go to Macduff, then Aberdeen, then Berwick-on-Tweed and then to other stops in England on passage to London.

   The new 54,611 tons deadweight oil tanker BRITISH GUARDSMAN built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Govan, Glasgow, is going into drydock today at Falmouth in England as part of her final check before being delivered to her owners, British Petroleum Company of London.

   The ship is 760 feet long and has a breadth of 97 feet and is too large to fit into any drydock in the Clyde and had to go to Falmouth for drydocking.   The new Inchgreen Graving Dock at Port Glasgow will soon be completed and will be able to accommodate all the large vessels being built on Clydeside.

   BRITISH GUARDSMAN is expected to return to the Clyde in three or four days time and on Monday is scheduled to undertake her speed trials over the Arran Measured Mile off the Island villages of Corrie and Sannox
