From "The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald" dated Friday 20th October 1972

CAPTAIN OF "LAIRDSFOX" RETIRES

Captain Hugh Mathieson, MBE, master of the "Lairdsfox" which sails regularly between Ardrossan and Belfast, retired recently and received gifts and tributes from his colleagues in Burns Laird Lines Ltd.

At an informal ceremony on board the ship in Ardrossan harbour on Tuesday, the marine superintendent of Burns Laird, Captain Peter Leask, said that in a small ship there was a friendly harmony among the personnel who sailed in her, founded on the temperament of the master.

"As long as I have known Captain Mathieson," he said, he has always kept a clean, efficient and friendly ship. The "Lairdsfox" is the cleanest British coaster that goes to sea and the enthusiasm of everyone in the ship makes this evident. She is clean, well-found and tidy as a ship should be."

"Captain Mathieson was an outstandingly good master who made his own decision, and one could always rely on that whatever decision he made was first in the interest of safety and secondly in the interests of commerce."

CHEQUE

Captain Leask then presented Captain Mathieson with a cheque, and Captain Mathieson, thanking Captain Leask, said he would buy something to remind him of all his shipmates.

Members of the crew, Burns Laird Lines and Mr. William Currie on behalf of Ardrossan Harbour Company, also paid tribute to Captain Mathieson.

Captain Mathieson, who belongs to Skye, began his career as a fisherman before sailing as an able seaman. He took his Mate's certificate in 1934 and his Master's certificate in 1938. He joined the Coast Lines Group in 1961 and transferred to Burns Laird in 1965.

While Captain Mathieson was master of the "Orchy" he was awarded the MBE in 1953 for the part he played in the rescue operations at the foundering of the Stranraer-Belfast car ferry "Princess Victoria."
