About 1840 on 13 July 2020 the container ship MSC MANYA

arrives at Greenock Container Terminal from Portbury, England.

She was assisted by tugs SVITZER MILFORD and AYTON CROSS

who met her off Whiteforeland Point and then turned her to port

off Greenock Esplanade and then backed her to berth port-side

to the berth.

It was a heavily overcast afternoon, with occasional light rain, and

the weak, watery sun broke through just in time to illuminate the ship,

and MSC MANYA had to wait off the terminal for around 40 minutes

for the Netherlands registered container ship ENCOUNTER to leave

the berth.

Point) waiting for MSC MANYA.

MILFORD was tasked to attach to MANYA’s stern centre lead,

and tug AYTON CROSS would not need to attach but simply to

push on the starboard side of the container ship.

2 and 3.   MSC MANYA arrives off Whiteforeland Point.   She

was having to wait about 40 minutes for Netherlands container

ship ENCOUNTER to leave the berth.

ENCOUNTER was delayed in discharging her last 12 or so

boxes because of a problem with the crane.

4 to 14.   Tug AYTON CROSS joins them off Greenock

Esplanade.

15.   Netherlands container ship ENCOUNTER has now

left the Container Terminal and, outward bound to Bilbao

  (Spain), passes MANYA.

16 and 17.    Tug SVITZER MILFORD is now attached to

the stern of MANYA, and AYTON CROSS moves to the

starboard side of the ship.

18, 19 and 20.   Both tugs begin canting (turning)

MSC MANYA to port (= left) to position her to come

astern to the berth.

21 and 22.   MANYA approaches the terminal, being

towed astern by MILFORD and pushed onto the berth

by AYTON CROSS.

Observations on UGAH DISCOVERY

I was engrossed with your photographs dated 28 August of

the Russian ship UGAH DISCOVERY.

She somehow reminded me of the profile of the “Lakers” on

the Great Lakes.   Is she designed to have a low air draft to

pass under any low bridges in the Russian rivers ?

And I couldn’t see any staff (can’t remember the correct name)

right at the bow which, with the bridge right forward, would

help the helmsman to be sure where the ship’s head is pointing.

And there can’t be many crew on her.   There’s hardly any accommodation and the lifeboats look tiny.

Any idea who are the owners ?

WAVERLEY (1947 - 1974 Excursion paddle steamer 240 feet long of Caledonian Steam Packet Company, Gourock) Own Page

Paddle Steamer WAVERLEY collides with pier at Brodick (Isle of Arran) injuring 24 passengers

Ship's locationBrodick (Isle of Arran, Firth of Clyde, Scotland)Port of RegistryGlasgow (Scotland, U.K.)
Gross Tonnage693

E-mail from Chris Greenhalgh (Edinburgh  … and Leeds)

WAVERLEY collides with pier at Brodick (Isle of Arran)

Thursday 3 September 2020 and excursion paddle

steamer WAVERLEY was making a sailing along the coast

of Arran.   It was a bright, clear day with little wind, and

everyone appeared to be enjoying the trip.

About 1715 when approaching Brodick pier she collided

bow-first into the east berth of the pier.   She was

carrying 213 passengers and 26 crew members, and

the impact of the collision catapulted passengers to

the deck.

24 passengers were injured, some seriously, others

less seriously.  The island’s Emergency services made a

full response and were quickly on the scene.

The volunteer Fire and Rescue Service assisted many

of the injured from the ship and some were taken by

ambulance to the War Memorial Hospital at Lamlash.

The most seriously injured were flown to the mainland,

to Crosshouse Hospital near Kilmarnock, by the Air

Ambulance and Coastguard Rescue helicopters.

WAVERLEY, due to the heavy contact with the pier,

had damage to her bow.

The British Maritime and Coastal Agency and the

Marine Accident Investigation Branch are investigating

the accident.

Meantime the ship remains berthed at Brodick Pier.

138 of Waverley's passengers wished to return to

the mainland and Caledonian MacBrayne arranged

for a special sailing of their CALEDONIAN ISLES

leaving Brodick at 2235 that evening to bring the

passengers to Ardrossan.

It is sad to consider that WAVERLEY had just returned

to service after two years off, and only a fortnight earlier

had finished a 2 million-pounds refit at the Dales Marine

Services Yard at James Watt Dock, Greenock.  Some very

recent images on this website show her looking immaculate

as she neared her return to service.
