Ardrossan Dockyard wins order for container ship from Coast Lines |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
From "The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald" newspaper dated 4th March 1960. ORDER FOR ARDROSSAN YARD CONTAINER SHIP FOR COAST LINES A container ship which, at 1550 tons gross, will be the biggest in their fleet, has been ordered by Coast Lines from Ardrossan Dockyard Limited. The order will provide about a year's work for the Ardrossan yard. Equipped with an Atlas Polar diesel engine of 2800 brake horse power and designed for a service speed of about 12 knots, the new ship will join several others of the same type which are now being operated by Coast Lines. The Spaniel and the Pointer, on the Liverpool-Belfast run, were converted from general cargo carrying to container carrying at the Ardrossan yard last year.
A trawler which the yard has been building for local owners is expected to be launched within the next few weeks.

Greenock tug "Brigadier" still aground on Horse Island |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
From "The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald" newspaper dated 4th March 1960. GREENOCK TUG STILL AGROUND Damage Inspected By Divers Occasional high winds and rough seas have hampered the initial salvage work on the 257-ton Greenock tug "Brigadier" which went aground on a shelf of rocks at the south tip of Horse Island, about half-a-mile from Ardrossan Harbour, on Sunday morning of last week. The salvage work, being carried out by Metal Industries, Faslane, Gareloch, has been in operation since last week and divers have been inspecting the damage. The tug, whose master and crew of seven were rescued by the Ardrossan Harbour Pilot boat when the mishap occurred, has been badly holed and the damage has been increased by the pounding the vessel has received from heavy seas and high tides. Another difficulty facing the salvagemen is the fact that the "Brigadier" is almost surrounded by rocks and has developed a thirty-degree list. At high tide the tug's maindeck is awash. Progress on the salvage operations will depend on the weather, but it is expected the work will last for at least another two weeks. |
