CAPE SABLE (1960-1966 Bulk carrier 503 feet long of Lyle Shipping, Glasgow) Own Page

Lyle Shipping's CAPE SABLE departs London on maiden voyage carrying 1,000 cars

Ship's locationLondon (England, UK)Port of RegistryGlasgow

In February the Lyle shipping Company took delivery of the cargo ship CAPE SABLE (10,900 tons) from William Denny and Brothers, Dumbarton, and she sailed from London on her maiden voyage with 1,000 cars, one of the biggest cargoes of this type ever to leave this country.

In the CAPE SABLE, and in her sister ship CAPE WRATH, now being fitted-out at Dumbarton, the cargo space can be divided into motor-car platforms, six to a hold, about 900 tons of timber planking being laid on steel framework to augment the deck space.   When the cars are unloaded the planks can be arranged to make the ships grain-carriers and the steel supporting joists hinged into the ships’ sides.

A further five ships in the Lyle fleet are also fitted for the carriage of cars.

The Caledonian Steam Packet car ferry GLEN SANNOX was on passage on her evening trip from Fairlie to Brodick (Isle of Arran)

and was nearing Brodick when a passenger rushed to the bridge telling of seeing a person in distress in the water off Corrie.

GLEN SANNOX was immediately turned and saw a man wearing

a lifejacket and struggling in the freezing sea.

A lifeboat was lowered and the man, aged 29 years, was pulled

from the water and brought onto the ship.

He told of paddling his canoe off Corrie (a small village a few

miles north along the coast from Brodick) and the canoe filled

with water and sank.   He had been some time in the sea and

was suffering from exhaustion and hypothermia (a dangerous

drop in body temperature) and the water, even at that time of

year is very, even bitterly cold.

When GLEN SANNOX arrived at Brodick the man was taken

ashore and removed by ambulance to the Cottage Hospital at

Lamlash for treatment.

Rescued by "Glen Sannox"

A 29 year old electronics engineer, Mr. Colin German, was rescued by the Clyde car ferry "Glen Sannox" after his canoe sank off Arran on Tuesday evening.

Mr. German, who works at the Marine Biological Station at Millport was taking his canoe from Corrie when the mishap occurred.

His Mae West kept him afloat, and a passenger on the "Glen Sannox" spotted him in the water.
The ship turned, and a lifeboat was lowered.

The rescue operation was carried out in a short time, and Mr. German, suffering from exhaustion and exposure, was taken to Brodick, where a Doctor and Ambulance were standing by.
He was removed to Lamlash Hospital.
